SIMILAR SPECIES: Butyriboletus querciregius, Boletus marshii

CRITICAL ID FEATURES: Reticulate stipe, yellow pores, blue staining (sometimes slow and weak), brownish cap, yellow flesh, mild taste, dense flesh resulting in heavy frutibodies.

NUTRITIONAL STRATEGY: Ectomycorrhizal with tanoak or live oak.

EDIBILITY: Edible and quite good, especially for the firm texture.

COMMENTS: This mushroom is fairly easy to recognize - the reticulate stipe sets it apart from a large number of boletes, and the yellow pores that stain blue set it apart from the Edulis group of boletes. Recently renamed by David Arora, it was formerly called Boletus appendiculatus.
