Battarrea Records from Santa Cruz County:

Battarrea practically stands alone in its appearance. The variably shaggy, woody stipe elevating a hemispherical orange-brown mass of extremely powdery spore mass set it apart from all other fungal fruitbodies. Saprobic, often fruiting in extremely nutrient poor soils or under cypresses, Brazilian pepper trees, pines. One of the stalked puffballs, this species appears to have a very wide distribution.
