SIMILAR SPECIES: Agaricus perobscurus, Agaricus praeclaresquamosus, Agaricus subrutilescens

CRITICAL ID FEATURES:

NUTRITIONAL STRATEGY: Saprobe. Prefers disturbed areas in Redwood forest.

EDIBILITY: Excellent! Sweet when young, nutty and stronger in age

COMMENTS: A. perobscurus is a relatively rare species that is also large, often shows yellowish colors, and smells almondy. However, the cap usually appears darker because it is covered with fine, inky-gray to blackish (not golden-brown to tan-brown) fibrils, and the almond odor is usually not as strong. A. subrutilescens has a scaly lower stipe, can be similarly colored, and often occurs under redwoods, but it does not stain golden-yellow, and doesn’t have an almondy odor.
