Fruitbody morphology quite diverse in this genus; most are agaricoid but others have highly reduced fertile surfaces and stipes. Saprophytic-parasitic. Most, if not all appear to have strong associations with specific mosses, liverworts, or algal films. Many are presumed to be parasitic on their associated cryptogams.
Identification usually straightforward, pay attention to substrate, coloration, and overall structure and stature.
