Albatrellus Records from Santa Cruz County:

Albatrellus produce terrestrial, fleshy, pored fruitbodies and consequently are often mistaken for boletes. The often tough or stringy flesh and frequently decurrent layer of angular pores help to set them apart. All species are mycorrhizal. Some species formerly placed in this genus have been transferred to Scutiger or Neoalbatrellus. Many species in the genus appear to be rather rare, and some appear to have cosmopolitan but very patchy distributions.

Important identification characters include overall coloration, tree associates, and staining reactions (although these are often slow).
